I was 'average'... But I ended up at an elite Select entry school

My story of getting accepted into a Selective School was far from typical.

I was never considered a ‘gifted’ or ‘genius’ student…

And I was never in the ‘accelerated’ or SEAL programs at school.

But in the end, I still managed to get accepted into a Selective School - going on to graduate with a 97.65 ATAR and admission into Law at Monash University.

This whole experience taught me a lot.

And in particular, it taught me that a lot of what other people call ‘innate ability’ or ‘talent’...

Are actually just things that you can learn.

People assume that they have to be geniuses to pass the Victorian Selective Entry High Schools exam…

They say that it’s only for the ‘gifted’ students, who have been ‘child prodigies’ from a young age.

But who’s to say that you can’t just learn how to get a ‘superior’ (top 11%) mark on all 5 sections of the exam?

✔️ You can learn how to write A+ essays and creative pieces (and succeed on the writing component of the exam).

✔️ You can level up your vocabulary and learn the skills & strategies required to succeed on the ‘Reading’ and ‘Verbal’ components on the exam.

✔️ And you can learn the underlying skills & formulas required to answer all of the ‘Maths’ and ‘Quantitative’ components of the exam correctly without running out of time.

ALL of these skills are learnable. 

This is exactly why I tell all of my students that regardless of whether they are the top of their class or just another ‘average’ student…

The only thing that matters is that they master the skills, strategies and formulas required to succeed on the exam.

I’ve seen ‘genius’ students fail the exam… and I’ve seen ‘average’ students pass with top 1% marks.

And so the only way to ensure that you don’t end up as another student who ‘just couldn’t quite finish the exam in time’ or ‘just wasn’t quite smart enough’...

Is to master these skills.
